Grenville Mellen was born in Biddeford, Mass., on 19 June 1799. He was the son of Prentiss Mellen (1764-1840), U.S. Senator from Massachusetts and later chief justice of the Supreme Court of Maine. When he was still young, his parents moved to Portland, Me. Mellen took up his college studies at Harvard College and was class poet for his 1818 graduating class. Grenville Mellen died in 1841.
